چکیده

This paper discusses colorants found in Tumulus MM, the tomb of King Midas or his father, at Gordion, capital Phrygian kingdom. Chromophores, colorants, and auxiliaries are preserved largely independent textiles they once colored. The MM now fragmentary due to degradation processes that occurred inside chamber. For DHA 26 (Vienna, Austria, 2007), we discussed a group golden-yellow fragments from appeared be tabby cloth but were skeletal lattices goethite, αFeOOH (yellow ochre), as identified by FTIR, with SEM/EDS, XRD molybdenum Kα radiation, NIR, Raman spectroscopy. “dyeing” has been replicated using patented method; originally it may have involved controlled redox reaction, based on our preliminary experiments. Amidst goethite lattices, some green, near-black lines within yarn spiral, indigo FTIR time. Other masses colorations red, orange/brown, purple deep red veins did not yield identifiable inorganic coloration profiles SEM/EDS. A fragment (2003-Tx-6 Front) was assayed ICP-MS for mordants bromine, neither could found. Recently, direct analysis real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) enabled us successfully detect organic colorants. one fragment, indoxyl, isatin, indigo, leuco-indigo identified. One striated red-to-brown (2003-Tx-3) contained alizarin, purpurin, xanthopurpurin, lucidin, other madder substituents; also indigo/isatin indoxyl nor leuco-indigo. beige-brown like 2003-Tx-5 sometimes rubiadin, lucidin rarely purpurin indigo-related compounds. (2003-Tx-6) shared analogues browner hues. versatility appears related Anatolian pile carpets flat weaves. Our new analyses confirm textile colorists indeed superb, versatile dyers.

Analysis of Molded and Coreformed Glass from 1st Millennium BC Gordion, Anatolia

We report the analysis of glass vessels recovered from 1st millennium BC contexts at the site of Gordion, the ancient capital of the Anatolian Kingdom of Phrygia (in modern day Turkey). The Phrygians (c.8 th -7 th century BC) were renowned for their metalworking skills and produced vessels in a distinctive “Phrygian” style. While no archaeological evidence has yet been found to support local gl...

Non-invasive Analyses of Ancient Ceramics Colorants

Present research exploits the benefits of the non-invasive and non-destructive spectroscopic methods in order to characterize the pigments which constitute the colorants found on ancient ceramic pieces. A red colorant, which occurs on the outer surfaces of the ceramic pieces excavated from archaeological finding sites Čepin-Ovčara and Kneževi Vinogradi-Osnovna škola and in earth piece from Aljm...

Nitrogen cycling by wood decomposing soft-rot fungi in the "King Midas tomb," Gordion, Turkey.

Archaeological wood in ancient tombs is found usually with extensive degradation, limiting what can be learned about the diet, environment, health, and cultural practices of the tomb builders and occupants. Within Tumulus Midas Mound at Gordion, Turkey, thought to be the tomb of the Phrygian King Midas of the 8th century B.C., we applied a stable nitrogen isotope test to infer the paleodiet of ...

Ancient DNA from Human and Animal

Research on ancient DNA (aDNA) has the potential to enable molecular biologists and archeologists to decipher certain aspects of history by direct looking into the past. However, several major problems in this field limit the applicability of aDNA studies, most importantly contamination with modern DNA and postmortem DNA degradation. In this study we extracted and analyzed aDNA obtained from ~3...
